ALCOHOL AND YOUR HEALTH

When it comes to alcohol and your health, it’s important to stay within the recommended guidelines. The less
you choose to drink, the lower your risk of alcohol related harm

ALCOHOL IN THE WORKPLACE

Labourpower does not permit the consumption, possession or being under the effects of alcohol during work hours and has a zero tolerance policy. A reminder that random alcohol testing can occur at any of our client’s sites.

IS IT TIME TO RETHINK HOW MUCH YOU DRINK?

Enjoying a social drink from time to time is often considered to be part of the Australian culture. But indulge too much and you increase your risk of developing an alcohol-related injury or disease.

  • Healthy men and women can reduce the harm of alcohol-related disease or injury by limiting their drinking to no more than two standard drinks on any one day
KNOW YOUR STANDARD DRINKS

Alcoholic drinks come in different strengths and serving sizes. Always keep track of how many drinks you have had. In Australia, a standard drink provides 10g alcohol and is equal to approximately:

  • 285 mL of full-strength beer
  • 100 mL of wine
  • 30 mL of spirits
  • 275 mL of premixed ready-to-drink beverage
TIPS FOR CUTTING BACK ON THE BOOZE
  • Set yourself some drink limits that you stick to and aim for two alcohol free days per week
  • Make every second drink a glass of water or non-alcoholic beverage
  • Avoid snacks that are high in salt. Too much salt is unhealthy, and it can also increase your thirst
  • Never mix alcohol with energy drinks as the caffeine lowers your ability to manage your alcohol intake
  • Try alternatives such as low carb or light beers or reduced-alcohol wine
  • For help and more information, visit the Drinkwise website or call the  Alcohol Drug Information Service (ADIS) free, 24-hour support line on 1800 250 015

MANAGING WEALTH FOR BETTER FINANCIAL HEALTH

To improve your financial wellbeing, you need to:

  • Know where, when and what you spend your money on

Money worries can be all consuming so it’s important to take steps to look after yourself and your finances. This includes understanding your debt level and how you plan to manage and make repayments (a financial advisor can help you with this). You can also look for ways to help with spending such as:

  • RENT/MORTGAGE: Ask your landlord or mortgage provider about rent or repayment options
  • UTILITIES (gas, water, electricity): Ask your provider about payment options, look for providers with better deals
  • FOOD: Advance meal  planning and prep  (e.g. cook a big batch that you can divide into portions and freeze
TIPS FOR CONTROLLING YOUR FINANCES
  • Create a budget that works for you and your circumstances (try using one of the free budgeting apps available)
  • Review any non-essential spending
  • Don’t be afraid to seek professional advice
  • If you’re feeling overwhelmed by financial issues, you can start by calling the free National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007. The helpline is open Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 4.30pm

MATURE AGE WORKERS AND YOUR BUSINESS. WHY EXPERIENCE MATTERS!

Mature age workers – those aged 50+ – bring a wealth of experience and reliability to your workplace.
Often you will find them to be more responsible, more level-headed and more loyal to your business in the long-term.

6 reasons to consider mature age workers for your business

1. INCREASE ROI

Hiring can be costly, not to mention the amount you invest in wages for your staff. With a mature age hire you’re recruiting someone with years of experience navigating the workplace. This means a better return on investment (ROI) for your business.

2. LONG-TERM COMMITMENT

Mature age workers are far more likely to commit to your business for the long haul. In fact, studies show that workers age 55+ are five times less likely to change jobs than a worker under the age of 25. This is good news for your company as you’ll save time and money on recruitment.

3. MORE LIFE EXPERIENCE

Your mature age hire might not always bring specific industry experience with them. But most will bring a lifetime of workplace and interpersonal skills. Skills such as patience, respect and communication are all invaluable to a business – and your mature age hire is likely to have those in spades.

4. IMPROVE DIVERSITY

Increasing diversity with a mature age hire can also help improve your standing in the community and with your customers. Diversity is a highly valued trait when it comes to attracting new clients and better talent to your organisation. As a result, you will have the opportunity to market yourself more effectively.

5. ACCESS TO A NEW DEMOGRAPHIC

With Australians aged between 45 and 64 owning half the country’s household wealth – that’s a lot of buying power! Remember that employing a mature age worker can bring an entirely new perspective to the table. This might come in handy for developing your marketing approach to this valuable demographic.

6. WAGE SUBSIDIES

Finally, hiring mature age workers brings many benefits to your business, including potential access to wage subsidies. It could be a nice extra bonus for your business!

If you want to gain access to a wide range of experience and quality candidates for your business, Labourpower can help. Connect with us on LinkedIn or speak to our friendly recruiters today.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR VIDEO JOB INTERVIEW

COVID-19 or coronavirus has changed the way we interact with each other. It has also had an impact on the hiring process with video job interviews becoming increasingly common. For job seekers, this makes the already daunting job interview even more challenging as we navigate the world of virtual communication. Here are some video job interview tips to set you up for success.

Tips for a successful video job interview

KNOW YOUR TECHNOLOGY

Find out which video platform is going to be used for your interview (e.g. Zoom, Microsoft Teams). Spend time before your interview getting to know how the platform works. Try a test run with a friend so that you get a feel for the technology and the camera you’re going to be using.

DRESS FOR SUCCESS

This might be a video job interview, but you still need to look the part. Dress appropriately for the type of job you’re interviewing for (and don’t just dress for where the camera can see). Knowing that you’ve nailed the dress code will really help boost your confidence on the day.

BE PREPARED

Do your homework in advance by researching your potential employer. Prepare some notes and talking points that you can have in front of you. Make sure that your laptop is fully charged on the day (or mobile phone if you’re using it). Put your mobile and any email notifications on do not disturb. Sit somewhere that has good lighting and remove all distractions.

Ways to research potential employers

JOB ADS

The job ad is a great place to start your research as most will include at the very least, a short blurb about the company. Once you hear that you have an interview, going back to review both the company blurb and the specifics of the position will help you prepare.

COMPANY WEBSITES

Your next stop should be the company website. Here you will find plenty of information to put you ahead of the game. On the ‘About Us’ page you can check out the company’s history, company vision and a bit about their people. Look around for other useful information on the website such as what products they sell or the services they offer.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Business social media pages are where you can keep track of announcements of any exciting new developments, news or achievements. With social media being such a dynamic platform, this is a great place to get a feel for the day-to-day energy of the company and the types of things they value.

Remember… preparation is key

Getting some practice with the video platform you’re using will help make you feel more comfortable. You can then relax into your interview and use the knowledge you gather about your prospective employer to show that you’ve come prepared.

If you need help looking for a job and preparing for an interview, then the team at Labourpower is here to help. Get in touch and don’t forget to connect with us on Facebook or LinkedIn and stay up-to-date with all the latest news and opportunities!

STAYING CONNECTED IN A SOCIAL DISTANCING WORLD

Social distancing is (for now at least) our new norm. It is key to helping slow the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). It’s changed the way we work and the way we interact with each other. So in our social distancing world, let’s explore why it’s more important than ever to find ways to stay connected.

The importance of staying connected

Staying connected during a time of crisis helps us manage our mental well-being. Studies also show that maintaining social connections keeps us healthier, happier and more inclined to be socially responsible.

Social distancing without feeling isolated

Social distancing can lead to us feeling lonely. Finding ways to maintain social support can help improve our capacity to cope with stress.

SCHEDULE FACE-TO-FACE(TIME)
Use technology to host a virtual catch-up (choose from one of the many options available such as Facetime, Skype, Houseparty and Zoom). Schedule lunch or dinner at the same time or after-work drinks at the end of the week.

CHALLENGE YOURSELF
Now is the perfect time to take up a new hobby or interest. Learn a language, read a new book, take up baking, declutter your home, spruce up your resume or LinkedIn profile – the possibilities are endless!

SUPPORT OTHERS
Check in with your neighbours (while practising social distancing). Small acts of kindness such as offering to walk their dog or do some shopping can help lift spirits.

Social distancing and your business

With so many businesses operating with a remote workforce it’s important to find times to stay connected and ensure that everyone continues to feel part of the team.

TECHNOLOGY
Provide reliable access to technology such as emails, file servers and video conferencing to support collaboration.

REGULAR CHECK-INS
Make sure that Managers and Team Leaders check-in regularly with team members to help boost morale and keep everyone on track.

DON’T MAKE IT ALL ABOUT WORK
Find fun ways to keep everyone connected by continuing to celebrate milestones (birthdays, work anniversaries) and hold virtual after-work catch-ups.

Social distancing and your job

If you’re one of the many people supporting Australia’s essential services, make sure you follow all guidelines to ensure your health and safety.

PHYSICAL DISTANCING
Social distancing also applies in the workplace so try to keep a distance of at least 1.5 metres between you and other workers.

GOOD HYGIENE
Wash your hands regularly for at least 20 seconds using soap and water (or an alcohol-based hand sanitiser).

KNOW THE SYMPTOMS
Make sure that you’re familiar with the COVID-19 symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat and shortness of breath) and do not go to work if you are unwell.

And finally, remember…

It’s important for everyone to stay connected with family, friends and colleagues through this challenging time. FREE resources and mental well-being support to help you cope with any COVID-19 concerns are also available at thiswayup.org.au OR coronavirus.beyondblue.org.au/
