HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR VIDEO JOB INTERVIEW

COVID-19 or coronavirus has changed the way we interact with each other. It has also had an impact on the hiring process with video job interviews becoming increasingly common. For job seekers, this makes the already daunting job interview even more challenging as we navigate the world of virtual communication. Here are some video job interview tips to set you up for success.

Tips for a successful video job interview

KNOW YOUR TECHNOLOGY

Find out which video platform is going to be used for your interview (e.g. Zoom, Microsoft Teams). Spend time before your interview getting to know how the platform works. Try a test run with a friend so that you get a feel for the technology and the camera you’re going to be using.

DRESS FOR SUCCESS

This might be a video job interview, but you still need to look the part. Dress appropriately for the type of job you’re interviewing for (and don’t just dress for where the camera can see). Knowing that you’ve nailed the dress code will really help boost your confidence on the day.

BE PREPARED

Do your homework in advance by researching your potential employer. Prepare some notes and talking points that you can have in front of you. Make sure that your laptop is fully charged on the day (or mobile phone if you’re using it). Put your mobile and any email notifications on do not disturb. Sit somewhere that has good lighting and remove all distractions.

Ways to research potential employers

JOB ADS

The job ad is a great place to start your research as most will include at the very least, a short blurb about the company. Once you hear that you have an interview, going back to review both the company blurb and the specifics of the position will help you prepare.

COMPANY WEBSITES

Your next stop should be the company website. Here you will find plenty of information to put you ahead of the game. On the ‘About Us’ page you can check out the company’s history, company vision and a bit about their people. Look around for other useful information on the website such as what products they sell or the services they offer.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Business social media pages are where you can keep track of announcements of any exciting new developments, news or achievements. With social media being such a dynamic platform, this is a great place to get a feel for the day-to-day energy of the company and the types of things they value.

Remember… preparation is key

Getting some practice with the video platform you’re using will help make you feel more comfortable. You can then relax into your interview and use the knowledge you gather about your prospective employer to show that you’ve come prepared.
